Campaigning for Oleg Sentsov

Two sides of a flyer (known as ‘postcards’ in PEN’s campaigns) used in the American Centre’s 2018 campaign advocating for the release of the Ukranian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who was imprisoned in May 2014 for protesting against the annexation of Crimea. The front of the postcard (above) shows a photograph of Vladimir Putin’s car passing a group of campaigners in Helsinki, who rallied for Senstov’s release during the Trump-Putin Summit that took place on 16 July 2018. The back of the postcard (below) summarises the facts of Sentsov’s persecution, outlining a timeline of developments since his arrest and incarceration. In 2017 the American Centre awarded Sentsov the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award. On 7 September 2019 Sentsov was freed from a penal colony after more than five years of detention.
