First Day of the Dead event in London
Photograph of PEN members at the inaugural protest event held for PEN International’s Day of the Dead. On 2 November 2011, members of the public, members of staff from PEN International and English PEN, students from the King’s College PEN group, and assorted translators met outside the Mexican Embassy in London to hold a vigil for the persecuted, murdered and missing journalists of Mexico – casualties of the ‘war on drugs’. Since then PEN International has continued to used the Dia de Muertos period traditionally celebrated in Mexico – late October to early November – to commemorate journalists and writers who are killed or disappeared as a result of their work.
