Day of the Dead Campaign illustration
Illustration by Maxine Young for PEN International’s Day of the Dead campaign. The Day of the Dead campaign was launched on 2 November 2011 to commemorate Mexican journalists and writers who had been killed or disappeared in the course of their work. Today the campaign focuses not only on the state of persecution in Mexico but in all countries, and calls on their governments to bring an end to impunity, violence and persecution of journalists and writers, as well as to protect freedom of expression. During the campaign PEN members, supporters and writers take part in traditional activities usually undertaken during the Dia de Muertos festival in Mexico, such as building altars decorated with the symbolic colours of purple (for pain), white (for hope) and pink (for celebration).
