Photograph of the Turkish journalist Şanar Yurdatapan speaking at a protest rally held at Istanbul University on 11 March 1997. Standing just behind Yurdatapan is Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, international secretary (2004-07) and vice-president emeritus of PEN International. Leedom-Ackerman was in Turkey for the first Gathering in Istanbul for Freedom of Expression, which took place on 10-12 March 1997, and at which Leedom-Ackerman headed a delegation of PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee – of which she was the chair at that time.
