Photograph of PEN members at a protest rally held at Istanbul University on 11 March 1997. Among them are: Alexander Tkachenko, founding member and general secretary of the Russian Centre (1994-2007), second from the left; Hanan Awwad, president of the Palestinian Centre (1992-), fourth from the left; and Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, international secretary (2004-07) and vice-president emeritus of PEN International, second from the right. These PEN members were in Turkey for the first Gathering in Istanbul for Freedom of Expression, which took place on 10-12 March 1997, and at which a delegation from PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee were in attendance – headed by the committee’s then chair Leedom-Ackerman.
