Photograph of H. G. Wells (second from the left), president of PEN International (1933-36) and PEN’s Wartime International Presidential Committee (1941-46). This photograph was most likely taken when Wells visited Mumbai on 16 December 1939 whilst en route to Australia, where he spent his brief stopover speaking with a group of academic and literary figures in India about the crisis affecting Europe during World War Two.
