Oleg Sentsov’s case

Front of a flyer (known as ‘postcards’ in PEN’s campaigns) used during one of the American Centre’s 2018 campaigns, which called for the release of Ukranian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who is depicted here. In May 2014, Sentsov was imprisoned in Russia for protesting against the annexation of Crimea. The American Centre, along with PEN International and other PEN Centres, campaigned for his release, and on 7 September 2019 Sentsov was freed from a penal colony after more than five years of detention. In 2017 Sentsov won the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award.
