Brochure commemorating Ken Saro-Wiwa

Brochure created and distributed by the Basque Centre in 2005 to commemorate the life and work of Nigerian poet, writer, and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. Saro-Wiwa fought in defence of the Ogoni people, of whom he was a member, whose land had been environmentally degraded by intensive oil extraction by multinational companies. He was arrested and charged with incitement to murder in 1994, and was executed on 10 November 1995 under orders from General Sani Abacha’s regime. PEN International and PEN Centres campaigned for and continue to support Saro-Wiwa’s case, which remains open, and this booklet provides a biography of Saro-Wiwa, the cases he was fighting for, and extracts of his writing, poetry, and a speech given at his trial.
