Philip Roth and Günter Grass receive Karel Čapek Awards

Photograph of a ceremony held in Prague in 1994 at which Philip Roth and Günter Grass were awarded the inaugural Karel Čapek Award for outstanding literary achievement. This award was presented by Václav Havel, President of Czechoslovakia (1989-92) and first President of the Czech Republic (1993-2003), who can be seen standing in the middle of the group surrounding the table. Grass is standing to the left of Havel, and Emmanuel Dongala, who collected the prize on Roth’s behalf, is standing to his right. This ceremony took place at the 61st PEN International Congress in Prague, 1994, the title of which was Literature and Tolerance.

Photographie d'une cérémonie ayant eu lieu à Prague en 1994 lors de laquelle Philip Roth et Günter Grass ont reçu le premier Prix Karel Čapek pour leurs réalisations littéraires exceptionnelles. Ce prix était présenté par Václav Havel, président de Tchécoslovaquie (1982-92) et premier président de la République tchèque (1993-2003), que l'on peut voir debout au milieu du groupe qui entoure la table. Grass se tient debout à la gauche de Havel, et Emmanuel Dongala, qui récoltait le prix au nom de Roth, se tient à sa droite. Cette cérémonie a eu lieu lors du 61e Congrès de PEN International à Prague, en 1994, sous le titre Literature and Tolerance.
