Czech Centre Board Caricature

Cartoon by the Czech artist Adolf Hoffmeister, chairman of the Czech Centre (1963-70), depicting a meeting between members of the Czech Centre’s first Board. From left to right, with their corresponding positions at the time, are: Božena Benešová, treasurer; Karel Čapek, founder and first president of the Czech Centre (1925-33); Hanuš Jelínek; Vilém Mathesius; Josef Šusta; A. M. Tilschová; and Jiřina Schubertová. The Czech Centre was officially established when thirty-eight Czech writers, editors, scientists and translators met at the Café Louvre in Prague on 15 February 1925.
