Liu Xiaobo’s Nobel empty chair

Photograph of an empty chair in transit to the Nobel Prize ceremony held at Oslo City Hall in Norway on 10 December 2010. This chair was sent to the awards ceremony to represent Liu Xiaobo, co-founder and president of the Independent Chinese Centre (2003-07) and the winner of that year’s Nobel Peace Prize, who was imprisoned in Jinzhou prison in North East China at the time and thus prevented from attending the event in person. Xiaobo was bestowed the prize “for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”.
