Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo

Flyer (known as ‘postcards’ in PEN’s campaigns) from one of the American Centre’s 2019 campaigns, which called for the release of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who are both depicted here. Reuters reporters Lone and Soe Oo were imprisoned by the government of Myanmar in 2018 for reporting on the persecution of the Rohingya people in Rakhine state. The American Centre, alongside PEN International and other global PEN Centres, campaigned for their release, and aimed to draw attention to the crisis in Rakhine state. Lone and Soe Oo were eventually released in May 2019 after spending 500 days in prison on the outskirts of Yangon.
