Copy of “H.G. Wells in Bombay,” The Indian P.E.N. 5, no. 1 (1 January 1939): 1. This article, published in The Indian P.E.N., the All-India Centre’s original internal editorial, recounts H.G Wells’ visit to Mumbai on 16 December 1938. Wells, president of PEN International (1933-36) and PEN’s Wartime International Presidential Committee (1941-46), was en route to Australia when he paid the visit, and spent his brief stopover meeting with a group of academic and literary figures to discuss the human rights crisis afflicting democracy in Europe during the Second World War, as well as comparing British and American modern literature. At this time The Indian P.E.N. was edited by Sophia Wadia, founder of the All-India Centre.
