Attempts to create an Indian PEN Centre began as early as 1925. John Galsworthy, the founder-president of PEN International had persuaded Rabindranath Tagore to become an honorary member of the organization from its founding in 1921. In 1931, an Indian Centre was proposed, with Sarojini Naidu as its head but, it was only a few years later, in 1934, that the Colombian-born Sophia Wadia got the Centre off the ground.

Les premières tentatives visant à créer un Centre PEN indien ont vu le jour dès 1925 (Bird, 2017). John Galsworthy, le premier président de PEN International, avait persuadé Rabindranath Tagore de devenir membre honoraire de l’organisation dès sa fondation en 1921. En 1931, un Centre indien a été proposé, dont Sarojini Naidu devait prendre la direction, mais c’est Sophia Wadia, d’origine colombienne, qui a fait démarrer le Centre quelques années plus tard, en 1934.
