Melbourne Centre’s Constitution and Rules, 1938

Constitution and rules titled “The P.E.N. World Association of Writers: Constitution and Rules”, which were passed at a meeting held by the Melbourne Centre on 10 October 1938, f. 1. The meeting at which this annotated document was created, and at which the Melbourne Centre was officially established, was held at the Holly Tea Rooms in Melbourne. The document provides a summary of PEN’s principles and vision, sets out criteria for membership, and quotes a resolution passed by the American Centre at the 5th PEN International Congress in Brussels, Belgium, 1927, which set out objectives to promote literature and protect freedom of expression.
