This book uses archival material to retell the story of the 11th PEN International Congress in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, 1933, which proved to be a seminal Congress in PEN’s history. Under the leadership of H. G. Wells, president of PEN International (1933-36), PEN decided to temporarily revoke the German Centre’s membership at this Congress after delegates attempted to prevent the Jewish-German playwright Ernst Toller from speaking out against the Nazi book-burnings that had taken place that year. This book was produced for the 59th PEN International Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia, 1993, which was held exactly sixty years later.
