PEN members arriving at Hvar
Photograph of PEN members disembarking a ship to attend the 59th PEN International Congress in Hvar/Dubrovnik, 1993, which took place from 19-24 April and was titled Place and Destiny. As political tensions rose in Bosnia and Herzegovina throughout the early 1990s, some PEN members had expressed concerns about the 59th Congress being held in Croatia. In this photograph György Konrád, president of PEN International (1990-93), can be seen greeting press at the bottom of the steps. The Croatian writer, philosopher and human right activist Vlado Gotovac, can be seen standing just behind him. This photograph was taken by Damil Kalogjera.
