On 7 January 1927, the journalist from Zagreb’s daily newspaper Riječi (Word) wrote that: ‘many otherwise irreconcilable literary opponents gathered for the first time in the City Basement restaurant in Zagreb, at the founding meeting of the PEN Centre.’
