PEN’s 11^th Congress

Photograph of PEN members and associates at the 11^th PEN International Congress in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, 1933, which was held on 28 May. PEN’s principles of unity and freedom of expression were tested by the rise of Nazism in Germany in the 1930s, and this Congress proved to be a turning point in PEN’s history when – under the leadership of H.G. Wells, president of PEN International (1933-36) – the German Centre’s membership in PEN was temporarily revoked until after the Second World War.
