In the 1920s, after Australian soldiers had returned home from World War I, the country made the most of the Roaring Twenties – the jazz era. Many people felt the benefits of the country’s prosperous economy. It was a time of great optimism and progress. Women had greater freedom of expression and found work outside the home. This was reflected in their new fashions, short hair, smoking, dancing and improved access to jobs and education.
