Nancy Chang Ing’s reply to Chinese Centres

Folder of documents containing: 1 handwritten transcript by Yu Kwang-chung 余光中 of a speech made by Nancy Chang Ing 殷張蘭熙 in Caracas in 1983, ff. 4; 1 copy of a typed joint statement from the Chinese Centre, the Shanghai Centre and the Guangzhou Chinese Centre, Caracas, 28 September 1983, f. 1. Nancy Chang Ing, president of the Taipei Chinese Centre (1981-95) and vice-president of PEN International (1975-2017), made this speech at the 46^th PEN International Congress in Caracas, Venezuela, which took place from 25 September to 2 October 1983, in reply to a statement issued by three joint PEN Centres in China at the same Congress. In her reponse, Chang Ing disputes the three Chinese Centres’ accusations that the Taipei Chinese Centre uses their name when translated into English (Chinese Republic of PEN) as a political statement.
