Gioconda Belli
Photograph of Gioconda Belli, founding member and president of the Nicaraguan Centre (2013-). Belli was a human rights and political activist from a young age, occupying important positions in the Sandinista Party and living in exile in Mexico from 1976-79 as a result of her protests againt the Somoza dictatorship. Belli continues to be an outspoken campaigner for freedom of expression in Nicaragua, and has won several prizes for her literary works. Belli is also a member of the Spanish Royal Academy and the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
