Slobodan Novak and Vlado Gotovac

Photograph of Slobodan Novak, on the left, president of the Croatian Centre (1990-2000), speaking with Vlado Gotovac, in the centre, poet, activist and member of the Croatian Centre, and an associate. This photograph was taken by Damil Kalogjera during the 59th PEN International Congress in Hvar/Dubrovnik, 1993. As political tensions rose in Bosnia and Herzegovina throughout the early 1990s, some PEN members had risen concerns about the 59th Congress being held in Croatia. However, it was felt that the journey to Dubrovnik for the Congress from Venice – which involved some members boarding a ship that can be seen in the background of this photograph – acted as a symbolic message of international peace and unity. This Congress took place on 19-24 April and was titled Place and Destiny.
