Dubrovnik Congress memorial stone

Photograph of a memorial stone and plaque that was created to mark the 59^th PEN International Congress in Hvar/Dubrovnik, Croatia, 1993. This Congress, which took place on 19-24 April was titled Place and Destiny, held symbolic meaning both as a union during a time of rising tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and as a commemoration of a Congress that had taken place in Dubrovnik sixty years earlier, in 1933. PEN members can be seen standing in the background of the photograph alongside olive trees, which were also planted to mark the occasion. This photograph was taken by Damil Kalogjera.

Ce Congrès, qui s'est tenu les 19-24 avril et était intitulé Place and Destiny, symbolisait la solidarité au milieu d'une période qui voyait l'escalade des tensions politiques Bosnie-Herzégovine, et se voulait une commémoration d'un Congrès ayant eu lieu à Dubrovnik soixante ans plus tôt, en 1933. Este Congreso, que tuvo lugar del 19 al 24 de abril y cuyo título fue Place and Destiny, tuvo un doble significado: por un lado, simbolizó la unión durante un tiempo de tensiones crecientes en Bosnia y Herzegovina, por otro lado, marcó la celebración del sesenta aniversario de otro Congreso en Dubrovnik, el de 1933. Miembros de PEN pueden verse de pie en el fondo de la fotografía entre olivos, que fueron simbólicamente plantados en la misma ocasión.
