This photograph was taken by Damil Kalogjera during the 59^th PEN International Congress in Hvar/Dubrovnik, 1993. As political tensions rose in Bosnia and Herzegovina throughout the early 1990s, some PEN members had risen concerns about the 59^th Congress being held in Croatia. However, it was felt that the journey to Dubrovnik for the Congress from Venice – which involved some members boarding a ship that can be seen in the background of this photograph – acted as a symbolic message of international peace and unity. This Congress took place on 19-24 April and was titled Place and Destiny.
