Croatian Day of the Imprisoned Writer poster
Poster created by the Croatian Centre for Day of the Imprisoned Writer in 2011 and the 50th anniversary of PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee. PEN started the annually observed Day of the Imprisoned Writer in 1981, marking 15 November as a day on which writers, readers and PEN members around the world come together to stand in solidarity with writers in prison and at risk. Since the Writers in Prison Committee was founded in 1960, the Croatian Centre has honoured one writer in prison each year – represented on this poster as a list of fifty names. Liu Xiaobo, co-founder and president of the Independent Chinese Centre (2003-07), who was imprisoned in Jinzhou prison in North East China at the time, can be seen featured on the poster as the writer selected to be honoured in 2011.
