Protest for Liu Xiaobo in Oslo

Photograph of an image of Liu Xiaobo projected onto buildings in Oslo, Norway, above protestors campaigning for his freedom during the Nobel Prize Ceremony held at the Oslo City Hall on 10 December 2010. Liu Xiaobo, co-founder and president of the Independent Chinese Centre (2003-07), was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 “for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”. Since he was imprisoned in Jinzhou prison in North East China at the time, and was thus prevented from attending the event in person, he was represented at the ceremony by an Empty Chair. This photograph was taken and contributed by Marian Botsford Fraser, president of the Canadian Centre (1997-99) and chair of PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee (2009-12).
