Gloria Guardia
Photograph of Gloria Guardia, founding member of the Nicaraguan Centre and vice-president of PEN International (2006-19). Guardia achieved international recognition for her novels and essays and was a member of the Panamanian, Nicaraguan, and Colombian Academies of Letters, the Spanish Royal Academy, and a committed member of PEN International from 1990. A champion of inclusion and the Spanish language, Guardia spearheaded the introduction of Spanish as one of PEN’s official working languages at the 63rd PEN International Congress in Guadalajara, 1996, and subsequently established the Ibero-American Foundation of PEN in 1998, which worked, until 2016, to ensure that our Spanish-speaking members had access to all PEN documents and proceedings.
