Audience with the Dalai Lama

Photograph of Carles Torner, on the right, executive director of PEN International (2014-20), and Jennifer Clement, centre, president of PEN International (2015-), at an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala on 4 May 2017. Torner and Clement visited Dharamsala as a delegation from PEN International, meeting with the Tibetan Writers Abroad Centre and political figures to discuss PEN’s support for Tibetan writers. During this audience the delegates spoke about, amongst other things, PEN’s ongoing work for Tibetan writers in exile and their forthcoming ‘Make Space’ campaign, to which Dalai Lama said he gave “full support”, as well as The Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights – a copy of which can be seen lying on the table before Torner. The Dalai Lama particularly focused on discussing how to prevent the destruction on Tibetan land and rivers, which, he stressed, give life to many Tibetan people.
