Empty Chair demonstration
Photograph of protesters at an ‘Empty Chair’ demonstration that was organised by the Latvian Centre and held on 1 February 2019 in front of the Russian Embassy in Riga. This demonstration called attention to the cases of Ukrainian writers imprisoned in Russia, including Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian filmmaker who was arrested and sentenced for twenty years for protesting against Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The English Centre has used the symbol of an empty chair at its events for over thirty years. Today, PEN continues to use the symbol of an empty chair at its events to represent writers who are absent from meetings as a result of being imprisoned or persecuted.

Manifestación con la Silla Vacía
Fotografía de los manifestantes en una protesta de la Silla Vacía, organizada por el Centro Letón el 1 de febrero de 2019 en frente de la Embajada Rusa, en Riga. La protesta señalaba los casos de escritores ucranianos encarcelados en Rusia, como Oleg Sentsov, un cineasta ucraniano que fue arrestado y sentenciado a veinte años de cárcel por haber protestado contra la anexión rusa de Crimea. El Centro Inglés ha usado el símbolo de la silla vacía durante más de treinta años. Hoy, PEN sigue usando este símbolo de la silla vacía en sus eventos para representar a los escritores que no pueden asistir a los encuentros porque están siendo perseguidos o encarcelados.
