Photograph of Robert Somerlott, co-founder of the San Miguel de Allende Centre and one of the Centre’s earliest presidents. Although at the time it was unusual to have two PEN Centres in the same country, the San Miguel de Allende Centre was established in 1979 at the suggestion of Peter Elstob, international secretary of PEN International (1974–81), as a means of engaging with English-speaking writers based in Latin America, such as Somerlott. This photograph was used as a publicity shot, and is held in San Miguel de Allende Centre’s archives.
