Lloyd Duong as a young man
Photograph of Dương Thành Lợi (Lloyd Duong), president of the Vietnamese Abroad Centre (2018-20) at aged fourteen. Lloyd Duong left Vietnam on a small boat with twenty-six other refugees in the late 1970s. After initially being taken to Songkhla Refugee Camp in Thailand, he was eventually resettled in Canada on 10 May 1980 and currently works as a lawyer. Upon becoming president, Lloyd Duong stated that he envisioned the Vietnamese Abroad Centre as a progressive organisation operating under the motto: “Promote the Voices of Conscience and the Echoes of Compassion of Vietnamese across the Globe.”
