Karbassi was born in Tabriz in northwestern Iran and began writing poems from an early age. Her first book, written in Farsi, was published in her early twenties, and she has since been published more than ten times, with her work being translated into multiple languages and read widely across Europe and America. Karbassi is considered to be one of the most accomplished poets of her generation living in exile, and in 2009 she was awarded the Golden Apple Poetry Prize in Azerbaijan, and in 2012 was selected by Birkbeck Contemporary Poetics Research Centre (CPRC) as one of the fifteen most revolutionary poets to be working globally between the 17th and 20th Centuries. Karbassi is also one of the editors of Exiled Writers Ink magazine in London, where she now lives.
