Women writers protest at New York Congress

Photograph of delegates in a debate at the 48th PEN International Congress in New York, USA, which was held on 12-17 June 1986 and titled The Writer’s Imagination And The Imagination Of The State. At this Congress around one hundred-and-fifty women released a statement protesting the lack of female representation on panels at PEN events. This act of rebellion essentially set the formation of the Women Writers Committee into motion, and it was eventually established five years later, in 1991. This picture shows Karen Kennerly, former executive director of the American Centre, speaking on the left. The American writer and activist Betty Friedan is on right, looking on. Seated behind them, from left to right, are: Starry Krueger; Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, international secretary (2004-07) and vice-president emeritus of PEN International; and Meredith Tax, first chair of the Women Writers Committee (1991-94), finalising the draft. This photograph was published in the New York Times on 18 June, 1986.
