Tolstoy’s centenary
Tolstoy’s centenary
Photograph of a group of PEN members gathered before the Khadzhi Murat Stone, a memorial dedicated to Leo Tolstoy and inaugurated at this event, which took place on 8 November 2010 – one-hundred years since Tolstoy’s death. Among them are: Vladimir Tolstoy, eighth from the left (facing outwards towards the camera), the grandson of Leo Tolstoy, advisor to the President of Russia (2012-) and director of the Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy; Andreĭ Bitov, to the right of Tolstoy (holding a cap), president of the Russian Centre (1991-2016); and Gennady Oparin, to the right of Bitov (wearing a black leather jacket) then Head of Department of the Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy. This event was held near the grounds of Yasnaya Polyana in Pirogovo, the former home of Leo Tolstoy, which was turned into a writer’s museum in 1921.
