Spanish writers in exile in Australia
Minutes of a meeting held by the Melbourne Centre in Melbourne on 21 August 1939, titled “P.E.N. Committee Meeting”, f. 1. These minutes note that a key point raised at this meeting was the worldwide appeal made by the Comité d’Acceuil to help Spanish refugees forced to live in exile in France. It is noted that Australia would be hosting nine refugees from Spain, and that a decision would be taken at a dinner meeting held on 26 August 1939 on how best to help the three Spanish writers living in Australia, who would be “the responsibility of Australian writers for approximately two months”. Two points from John Wallace and Mrs Meyer was also raised, both regarding issues around getting in contact with the Melbourne Centre and processing membership requests. The document is signed by Leonard Mann, the Centre’s first president.
