Screenshot of an email exchange between Jennifer Clement, president of PEN International (2015-), and Andrew Solomon, president of the American Centre (2015-18) that took place on 22 May 2016, in which changes are suggested to paragraph three of PEN International’s Charter: adding the words “religious, gender, sexual orientation” to the list of hatreds PEN members must pledge to do their upmost to dispel. This discussion took place in preparation for the 82nd PEN International Congress in Ourense, Spain, which took place from 26 September to 2 October 2016 and was titled Building literary bridges.
