Reports on the 54th PEN International Congress

Copy of Callwood, June. ed.; Gibson, Graeme. “Newsletter,” The Canadian Centre: P.E.N. International, no. 27 (November 1989): 4-6. This newsletter from the Canadian Centre contains two reports on the 54th PEN International Congress in Toronto/Montreal, 1989, which was held from 23 September to 1 October and whose title was The Writer: Freedom And Power. The first report by June Callwood, president of the Canadian Centre (1989-90), summarises changes adopted at the Congress, including the Montreal Centre’s split into two – one francophone and one anglophone – which resulted in the creation of the Québécois Centre (whose offices moved to Quebec City) and the Canadian Centre (whose offices moved to Toronto). The second report by Graeme Gibson, president of the Canadian Centre (1987-89), summarises a series of topics discussed and initatives adopted, and notes the success of the two PEN Centre’s collaboration in hosting the Congress. The newsletter also contains a small advertisment calling out for poetry and short prose submissions.
