Malawian Centre

The Centre was established in 1994 after elections at the Prague Congress, Czech Republic. At that time, change had come to Malawi that required the politics of pluralism. Jack Mapanje, a poet, who had been in prison on no charge from 1987 had been released in 1991, and the English PEN Centre, which had campaigned for his release through the Malawi High Commission in London, contacted Edison Mpina, a renowned award-winning poet about the possibility of establishing the Centre.

Le Centre a été créé en 1994 après les élections tenues au congrès de Prague, en République tchèque. À cette époque, le Malawi avait connu des changements qui nécessitaient une politique de pluralisme. Le poète Jack Mapanje, qui avait été incarcéré en 1987 sans le moindre chef d’accusation, avait été libéré en 1991. Le Centre PEN anglais, qui avait fait campagne pour sa libération par l’intermédiaire du haut-commissariat du Malawi à Londres, a contacté Edison Mpina, un poète renommé et primé, afin d’évoquer la possibilité de créer le Centre.
