In 1991, George Marshall Naykene, editor of the Christian Chronicle newspaper was imprisoned for 18 months for criminal libel for publishing a libellous article in his newspaper against flight lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, then head of state under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) regime.
