PEN Emergency Fund advertisement
Advertisement for the PEN Emergency Fund. Upon being appointed vice-president of PEN International, the Dutch writer A. den Doolaard (alias of Bob Spoelstra) noticed that one element was missing from PEN’s support: the provision of material assistance. As a result, Doolaard began working on ideas for a special ‘writers-in-emergency fund’, and in January 1971 he founded the PEN Emergency Fund – an international fund based in the Netherlands. The PEN Emergency Fund supports critically persecuted writers and writers in exile with a one-off allowance to help them maintain themselves, and in many cases their families, in an emergency.
