Ma Thida and Elliot Philipp

Photograph of Ma Thida, founding member and president of the Myanmar Centre (2013-16), and PEN International Board member (2016-), and British gynaecologist and obstetrician Elliot Philipp, who wrote to the military government of Myanmar to ask for the liberation of Ma Thida. Ma Thida was incarcerated in October 1993 in Myanmar. She was accused of “endangering public peace, having contact with illegal organisations and distributing unlawful literature”. She was released in 1999. This picture was taken in Richmond, United Kingdom, where Ma Thida and Philipp met, in 2005.
