Liu Xiaobo’s Nobel Prize ceremony

A photograph of Liu Xiaobo, co-founder and president (2003-07) of the Independent Chinese Centre, and the recipient of that year’s Nobel Peace Prize, can be seen behind hanging them. When awarded this prize Xiaobo was imprisoned in Jinzhou prison in North East China, and was thus represented at the ceremony by an empty chair. Xiaobo was bestowed the award “for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”.
