Liu Xiaobo and Liu Xia

Photograph of Liu Xiaobo, on the right, co-founder and president of the Independent Chinese Centre (2003-07), with his wife, the poet, painter and photographer Liu Xia, on the left. This photograph was taken on Mount Lao in Qingdao on 20 May 2005. In 2008 Xiaobo was arrested and incarcerated as a political prisoner in Jinzhou Prison in Liaoning, where he spent the last eight years of his life. After it was announced that Xiaobo had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, Xia was effectively forced into house arrest, remaining under almost constant surveillance until July 2018.
