Hasenkeyf before the floods
Hasenkeyf before the floods
Photograph of the ancient town of Hasenkeyf in Turkey in 2005. In this year a delegation from PEN International visted Turkey for the International PEN Diyarbakir Seminar on Cultural Diversity, which was held on 20-25 March 2005 in Diyarbakir-Amed – bringing Turkish and Kurdish writers together for a conference hosted by the Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee. The delegation visited Hasenkeyf for a day during this trip, and Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, international secretary (2004-07) and vice-president emeritus of PEN International, took this photograph of the city before it was subjected to floods due to rising water levels caused by the Ilısu Dam.
