First Meeting of the Afghan Centre

Eugene Schoulgin, member of the Norwegian and Swedish Centres, president of the Writers in Prison Committee (2000-04), international secretary (2007-10) and vice-president of PEN International (2004-), can be seen standing behind the head table and addressing the room. Elizabeth Eide, Board member and vice-president of the Norwegian Centre (2003-18), is seated to his right. To Schoulgin’s left, from left to right, are Afghan Board members Habibullah Rafi; Waheed Warasta, executive director; and Samay Hamed. This photograph was taken when Schoulgin visited Afghanistan in 2003 as part of a delegation from the Norwegian Centre, which helped establish the Afghan Centre. Schoulgin’s handwritten captions can be seen on the reverse side of the photograph.
