Empty chair for Amanuel Asrat

Photograph of the empty chair that was displayed in Place d’Youville for the Eritrean poet Amanuel Asrat, taken on 15 October 2015 during the 81st Congress of PEN International, which took place from 13 to 16 October 2015 in Quebec City. The title of the Congress was Translation = Creation = Freedom. Asrat was arrested in 2001 and is believed to still be incarcerated in a maximum security prison, in Eritrea. From right to left are: Frankie Asare-Donkoh, president of the Ghanian Centre (2013-); Mohammed Sheriff, president of the Sierra Leone Centre and former Board member of PEN International; Frank Mackay Anim-Appiah, executive director of the Ghanian Centre; Marian Botsford Fraser, president of the Canadian Centre (1997-99) and chair of PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee (2009-12); and Solomon Hailemariam, president of the Ethiopian Centre (2016-).
