Declaration from Portuguese Centre founders

Declaration from Portuguese Centre founders

Declaration signed by Portuguese writers confirming their wish to establish the Portuguese Centre, 15 November 1974, Lisbon, ff. 2. Although the Portuguese Centre was only officially welcomed into PEN at the 33rd PEN International Congress in Jerusalem in 1974, records show that attempts had been made to establish a Centre as early as 1924 – the same year a military coup toppled the Portuguese First Republic. In this document the writers aknowledge having read PEN International’s Charter and sign on behalf of any Portuguese writers not present to pledge their support for the Centre’s creation in person.
