Campaign for Faraj Sarkoohi
Campaign for Faraj Sarkoohi
Photograph of PEN members campaigning for the liberation of Faraj Sarkoohi, honorary member and human rights commissioner of the German Centre. Among them are: Eugene Schoulgin, second on the left, member of the Norwegian and Swedish Centres, president of the Writers in Prison Committee (2000-04), international secretary (2007-10) and vice-president of PEN International (2004-); György Konrád, third from the left, president of PEN International (1990-93); Musa Moris Farhi, vice-president of PEN International (2011-19) and chair of both PEN International and the English Centre’s Writers in Prison Committees; Ziba Karbassi, second from the right, chairperson (2002-04) and internal director (2020-) of the Iranian Centre in Exile; and Ahmad Ebrahimi, at the end on the right, member of the Iranian Centre in Exile. Sarkoohi, who was a vocal dissident before the Iranian revolution in 1979, was kidnapped and imprisoned in 1996 and later released by the Iranian government in 1998 after worldwide protest. This photograph was most likely taken in 1996, around the time when Sarkoohi was imprisoned and this campaign began.
