A. den Doolaard in Radio Oranje broadcast

Photograph of A. den Doolaard (alias of Bob Spoelstra), during a Radio Oranje broadcast in 1943. A. den Doolaard was an active PEN member, and in 1971 founded the PEN Emergency Fund – a Netherlands based fund which supports critically persecuted writers and writers in exile with a one-off allowance to help them maintain themselves, and in some cases their families, in an emergency. From 1941-43 Doolaard became a well-known broadcaster on both Radio Oranje and Radio De Brandaris, two of the most important sources of information for the Netherlands during wartime.
